Manuel Escoto’s Story
|Mother and Son dance during
Like many people, nineteen-year-old Manuel was unaware of what chronic kidney disease was — the symptoms, or treatments. This all changed on January 1, 2006 when Manuel started feeling ‘off,’ went to the University of Alberta hospital, and was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure at the age of 19.
As his kidney function was below 10%, he was placed on dialysis immediately.
The doctor gave Manuel and his parents a brief overview about what dialysis was and told him he would be placed on the transplant list.
On September 4th, 2007, Manuel’s mother, Maria, became his real-life superhero when she donated her kidney to her “little Manuelito”. This successful transplantation also marked the 2000th kidney transplant in the Capital Health program.
At the time, Maria said, “I was never scared…when they told me the kidney matched, I was so happy…I give my kidney to you with all my heart.” Manuel is forever grateful she did.
