Here are their stories:
Moose Jaw cattle farmer waiting on a new kidney
Ryan Nilson’s journey with kidney disease began five years ago when he was diagnosed with diabetes. “I didn’t realize I had it until it was too late,” he says. His diabetes damaged his kidneys, landing him on dialysis 1 1/2 years ago. “At 40, I am the youngest guy at the clinic,” he says. A cattle farmer with his parents, Ryan drives into town every second day to do dialysis. “After that, I am drained. All I want to do is sleep,” he shares. Ryan is on the wait list for a kidney transplant and wonders how long it will take. “People tell me the wait is 2 – 5 years,” he says.
Knowing the wait for a deceased donor can be a long one, “my mom made me post on Facebook about needing a kidney,” Ryan says. “I never would have done that.” 900 people shared his post, and as a result five people have come forward as potential donors – two friends, one family member and even someone Ryan has never met. “A new kidney would mean less time in hospital and more time working the farm with my dad,” he says.
